What is FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL)?

FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) is a program that supports children and youngsters in order to introduce them to science and technology in a sporty atmosphere.

The objective is to:

  • make children and youngsters enthusiastic about science and technology
  • to equip the participants with the idea of team spirit
  • to encourage children and youngsters to solve complex tasks in a creative way

The basis of FLL is a robotics tournament in a cheerful atmosphere, where kids and youngsters need to solve a tricky “mission” with the help of a robot. The kids are researching a given topic within a team, they are planning programming and testing an autonomous robot to solve the mission. The FLL Teams take the opportunity to experience all steps of a real product development process: solving a problem under time pressure with insufficient resources and unknown competitors. FLL is a small microcosm of real business life in all its respects.

Robot Game

Teams have to design, build & program an autonomous robot using LEGO® Mindstorms® EV3 OR SPIKE Prime technology to solve missions on a scientific theme based table-top playing field. Teams get 1-2 rounds of 2.5 minutes each to solve missions on the competition day. Teams must also talk about their design thinking, strategy of solving missions, structural elements of the robot etc. in a 5 minute interview with judging panel. Teams shall procure the challenge playfield and LEGO® Mindstorms® EV3 OR SPIKE Prime technology under the value pack section.

Research Work

Teams have to explore/research a problem aligned with the scientific theme of playing field and analyze existing solutions if any. They need to either identify an improvement to existing solution or develop their own innovative solution for the chosen problem. They shall share their findings with their friends, neighboring community, corporates who will be interested at such solutions etc. During the competition day, teams have to display their work (Models, Show Me Posters, and Prototypes etc.) and present it to the judging panel during a 5 minutes interview session.

FIRST® Core Values

FIRST LEGO League is unique in a way that it doesn’t only assesses what teams have done (robot game, research project) but it also emphasizes on how they have been able to do it as a team. Teams have to uphold the importance of discovery than winning, honor the spirit of friendly competition, stay together as a team, display Gracious Professionalism & Coopertition and have unlimited FUN!

Teams should always remember the following FLL core values:

  • We are a team.
  • We do the work to find solutions with guidance from our coaches and mentors.
  • We know our coaches and mentors don’t have all the answers; we learn together.
  • We honor the spirit of friendly competition.
  • What we discover is more important than what we win.
  • We share our experiences with others.
  • We display Gracious Professionalism® and Coopertition® in everything we do.
  • We have FUN

Challenge 2020/21 Update

How and where can we help people be more active?

All around us, there are opportunities to play and be active — from open parks to cement courts, in our classrooms, and even when we’re waiting in line. But more and more people are not active enough. So Playing makes being active more fun. You get creative when you want to play, and it’s this creativity—your creativity—that can help motivate us to be more active.
